Ft. Lauderdale History
Ft. Lauderdale was once inhabited by Aboriginal natives, and then later by the Tequesta Indians. Before the area was officially developed and named, control of Ft. Lauderdale shifted between England, Spain and the United States. The city is named after a fort that was built in 1838 as the first stockade in the U.S. The fort was later the site of a significant battle in the Second Seminole War. The fort was officially abandoned in 1842 and the area remained undeveloped and unpopulated until around the mid-1890‘s. However, approximately 70 settlers maintained residence in the area, then known as “New River Settlement.”
In 1893, a man named Frank Stranahan arrived in New River Settlement to open a ferry operation to travel across the New River. Three years later, the railroad lines to the settlement were completed. These two events spurred organized growth and development in the area. The most rapid development occurred in the 1920‘s as the result of the Florida Land Boom. However, the hurricane of 1926 and the Great Depression slowed growth and caused many families to relocate to other areas.
During WW II, Ft. Lauderdale became a major U.S. military training center and base. During this time, the town was renamed “Ft. Lauderdale" and development was spurred by the large military complex which included Naval and Air Force training facilities. At the end of the war, the city experienced explosive growth as soldiers began to return to the U.S. and build homes in the area.
